Update on Visa 988

Stop the press, stop the press

The AMOU has sent a delegation working with the MUA to Canberra yesterday and today. The delegation consists of Robert Coombs, Tim Higgs and Jarrod Moran. The delegation is lobbying a number of senators to put a stop to the MCV subclass 988 visa introduced on the 1st of July 2014.

This new subclass will seriously undermine the current 457 regime where at least some checks and balances, and security overseeing exists.

There has been a hectic pass of meetings both yesterday and today drumming up support for Australian seafarers and protecting their right to employment in our own back yard. The AMOU is deeply concerned that this sort of legislation is designed purely to undermine the rights of our members to work in the Australian domestic industry and we are determined to fight this obvious encroachment.

Please remain posted for further details to come in the next few days of the outcome of these meetings.
