New Harbourmaster appointed in Darwin

Captain Tony O'Malley has been appointed as the new Darwin Harbourmaster. A decorated Royal Australian Navy veteran Captain O'Malley will oversee the safe running of the maritime activities of the port of Darwin for the next 3 years.

Retiring after a 32 year career with the Royal Australian Navy serving in Fiji , Kuwait, Somalia, Bougainville, the Solomon Islands, Timor Leste and Iraq and most recently serving as Chief of Staff, Headquarters Northern Command and Deputy Commander Northern Command. Captain O'Malley has also been recognised with the Bronze Star for exceptional service by the United States during the Iraqi war.

Minister for Transport Adam Giles said Captain O'Malley's appointment would be a great addition to the Port of Darwin, he is  someone of exceptional experience who will play an important role in setting safety standards and enforcing maritime regulation.

The new Harbourmaster said he was looking forward to working with Port of Darwin stake holders and was excited to be involved in the development of Darwin Harbour.

Andrew Hayes will be supporting Captain O'Malley as Assistant Harbourmaster. And former Harbourmaster Ian Niblock has taken up a position heading the Darwin Port Corporation maritime services delivery area, as General Manager Marine Services.
