MV Portland Statement

The AMOU condemns the behaviour of Alcoa engaging security guards to remove Australian seafarers from the Portland in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The situation created by the behaviour of Alcoa on Wednesday morning has left the Master and deck officers no choice but to legally follow Alcoas orders to sail as the ship was considered seaworthy.

For this action to have taken place there would have to have been other agencies outside of Alcoa and government officials involved. These questions need to be raised and accordingly answered.

No Australian seafarer should have been put in this situation or treated in this way by any ship owner or shipping company.
