Billionaire businessman Clive Palmer has formed a new commercial shipping company to service the transportation of nickel from his operations in Queensland.

Asia Pacific Shipping Enterprises, majority owned by Queensland Nickel Group, will operate a fleet of Chinese-built ships out of Singapore, Mr Palmer said.

Chinese company CSC Jinling Shipyard, formed 60 years ago, has been commissioned to build four 64,000 tonne ships, he added.

"This is an exciting time for the Queensland Nickel Group of Companies, which has an expanding international footprint across Asia and the South Pacific region," Mr Palmer said.

"We are well positioned to embrace further development opportunities.

Lloyd's List Australia asked Asia Pacific Shipping for more information about its proposed shipping operations but did not receive a response by press time.

Queensland Nickel owns the Palmer Nickel and Colbalt Refinery near Townsville, the five star Coolum Resort on the Sunshine Coast, the Styx Coal development in central Queensland and the Robina Woods and Colonial Golf courses on the Gold Coast
