Australian Shipping Industry Summit

Australian Shipping Industry Summit

On 15 July 2015, the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) announced it would hold a summit to identify measures to save the Australian shipping industry (see: ACTU Press Release 16 July 2015 )

The summit will bring together unions, business and politicians with the aim of:

  • Finding solutions that stem the loss of Australian registered and Australian crewed ships from the Australian domestic seaborne freight trade;
  • Identify longer term regulatory and fiscal arrangements that attract investment in ships and builds the industry through reformed shipping legislation, and a wide ranging shipping industrial policy package; and,
  • Developing coastal shipping policy options to put to Government as an alternative to the Government's Shipping Legislation Amendment Bill 2015 currently before the Parliament which if passed will wipe out the remaining domestic shipping industry.

The AMOU is seeking member input into the positions we take to the summit.

Jarrod Moran in our Melbourne Office will be co-ordinating the involvement of the AMOU at the summit.

Jarrod would welcome any views that members have on the above aims of the summit and can be contacted on 0417 316 370 or email jarrod@amou.com.au

It is expected the summit will take place in early to mid August 2015.
